You will learn about the how and why behind our architecture and the lessons learned during implementation. Get insight into the place PDM and PLM have in our organization today, how they are connected with other core databases, and what our further digitalization road map looks like. The Fusion 360 platform is an extremely powerful tool for design and manufacturing, and with the inclusion of an easily accessible API, it can become even more powerful to automate user workflows. This class is NOT an introduction to the API. Rather, this class will focus on a number of powerful techniques the presenters have developed throughout the years to significantly enhance developer workflows and increase what you may think is possible with the Fusion 360 Client API. The class will focus on a number of specific problems and use cases commonly encountered when building automations and application integrations. Come learn how to do things you may never have thought possible.

This industry talk will begin by describing where we were back in 2017, how we came to find out about Fusion 360 software, and the decision-making process we went through when converting to using Fusion 360. In 2017, our students were stuck to a desk in our “CAD suite” using a competitor product, “collaborating” with USB sticks, and finding creative ways to get around the limitations with “locked down” educational software. The talk will present some case studies detailing the impact Fusion 360 has had on certain workflows and teaching methodologies, as well as some fundamental details of how we deployed the software successfully and are now able to teach more than 300 novice engineers a year how to use the software. During each year that we have subsequently used Fusion 360, we have been able to refine our approach to teaching and using the software on a daily basis, and during the talk we will share some of the best practices and teaching materials we have created.

A fully optimized computer case was designed, validated, and manufactured using Fusion 360 integrated workflows. The enclosure serves to showcase various Fusion 360 technologies including Electronics Cooling Simulation, Generative Design, Generative Fluid Design, Additive Manufacturing, and Netfabb integration. Join us and learn how each one of these connected workflows contributes to the overall design and performance of the workstation. Our journey begins with the basic design and layout of the workstation and attempts to address common industry shortfalls. Advanced Fusion 360 technologies enable us to investigate novel designs for the internal case structure and flow-optimized ductwork, and then validate them with powerful, accessible simulation tools.

Additive manufacturing (AM), better known as 3D printing, is disrupting the manufacturing industry. Its capabilities and build processes make additive technologies ideal for applications such as light-weighting and component consolidation. In order to fully capitalize on the awesome power of AM, an understanding of the technology and its limitations is crucial. However, this is not a natural skill for most designers and engineers. Since AM is so new and different from traditional manufacturing, it comes with a completely different set of design considerations. When properly understood and applied, design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) can vastly improve printing times and it results in higher-quality parts. This class will be an introduction or reintroduction to Inventor software. It will also go into general detail about a lot of the common issues that come up on the Inventor Forum. It is generally understood that there are a greater number of intermediate and advanced Inventor sessions at Autodesk University; however, sometimes you need to go back to the basics and introduce/reintroduce people to some of these features they may or may not know about or understand—whether it's how to find them, or how to use them. This session will feature Inventor Professional 2021- 2018, and the handout will include some information on older versions information.

Inventor can be deployed on a secure virtual private cloud for enterprise-grade security and lower total cost of ownership.

We4bee pursues the goal of establishing a worldwide network of high-tech beehives. This is not only to promote environmental research and education, but also to establish an early warning system for earthquakes and other natural disasters. This project collaborates with the University of Würzburg, Germany. In this class Dr. Claudia Leikam (CEO of we4bee), Professor Hotho and Padraig Davidson from the Chair of Computer Science X (big data and machine learning), Professor Jürgen Tautz (THE bee expert), and the engineer Hans Neumayr will give us an overview about this research project. Hans Neumayr used Fusion 360 software and EAGLE software to create the electronics equipment and some mechanical parts of the beehives. Professor Hotho and Mr. Davidson will provide information on data collection and analysis. Professor Tautz is the well-known bee expert, and Dr. Leikam will give you a view of the scientific aspects of this amazing project.

In today’s market, more and more parts are needing faster turnaround times at lower costs. Multitasking machines help you complete a part in a single operation while reducing your setup times. In this class, we will start with the history of Mazak as an organization and how it created the multitasking machine market. We will cover the different architectures available in the industry and each of their benefits and shortcomings. From a functionality standpoint, we will discuss different types of synchronization, the reasoning behind each one, and their best-case uses. By showcasing some examples through case studies, we aim to highlight the higher-value work customers can obtain by utilizing these types of machine to their full potentials. Finally, we will look to the future and the use of hybrid multitasking machines.

When the COVID-19 outbreak began, makers across the globe came together to help fill the shortfall in supply chains and provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline workers by harnessing the power of a localized collective factory of 3D printers. At Warwick University we also sprang into action to help fight the virus. Large-scale additive manufacturing (LSAM) is a technology similar to that used in hobbyist desktop 3D printers. However, it generally has much bigger build platforms, larger nozzle diameters, and higher volumetric flow rates. This means it can be used as a rapid-response bridge manufacturing from 3D printing to injection molding. Using Fusion 360 software’s parameter tables, the speaker was able to generate a design that could be easily changed based on the printer setup, and be optimized for the faster printing times. In just three design iterations we went from 10 minutes to just 3.5 minutes.

We’ve all been there. Multiple sources of information, various software systems, and everyone needing to efficiently communicate to complete the project. AnyCAD software provides the medium to use, reuse, and exchange data of various types and from different sources. In this class, we’ll explore the different types of data supported by Inventor software and the applications included in the Product Design & Manufacturing Collection. We’ll dive into handling change and ensuring we associatively (when possible) share the data. What can AnyCAD do? It can associatively import DWG™ to build parts; keep third-party data in their non-native format; use 2D and 3D PDF for communication; perform to-and-from exchange with Revit software; share with others using the A360 cloud-based collaboration service; export Inventor bills of material (BOM) information to nonengineering users; and associatively share information with Fusion 360 software—and who knows what else!

As a longtime Inventor user, the speaker found Fusion 360 software interesting, but also challenging. The workflows were close enough to Inventor to be easily accessible, but different enough to be challenging. And just how does this cloud storage thing work anyway? But the speaker kept at it enough to the point of comfort in either platform. So why bother? Besides the obvious answer that learning new software is in their job description, the speaker found that it’s a great platform for easily doing many simulation analyses. And when they started exploring the 3D machining tools, they found the same thing applied there. Plus, it's easy enough to acquire for home use. So, if you haven’t tried Fusion 360, but you know Inventor or a similar platform, spend an hour to learn the workflows, and save many more!

This instructional demo will show you how to take your ideas to reality through the use of design in Fusion 360 software, and how to utilize 3D printing to manufacture your idea. 3D printing (or additive manufacturing) is a great technology not only for prototyping, but also for all the way through to end-use components in industry. 3D printing is now easily affordable for the everyday user, and it can be difficult to know where to start. This talk will show you how to get started with Fusion 360, introduce some different types of 3D printing with the focus on fused filament fabrication (FFF), then go on to cover some common mistakes when using 3D-printing technology and how to avoid them.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is one of the most predominantly used additive manufacturing (AM) technologies today, producing functional metallic parts in several industries such as aerospace, medical, and automotive. As an emerging and complex technology, the manufacturing design guidelines and rules of LPBF along with its impact on sustainability are not well understood. This session builds off design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) principles as they apply to specific process parameters and machine dynamics defined in LPBF. These include recoater blade interference, support structure, and part distortion. This session also provides insight into the impact of AM on sustainability, as well as highlighting key design considerations to improving the implications on sustainability. With these considerations in mind, the session will explore how a user can implement design variables into their workflow using Autodesk Netfabb and its Simulation Utility.

For the last couple of years, the speaker has taught generative design classes at Autodesk University. The first years, we did an “Introduction to Generative Design” lecture; last year we did a lab showing the process and setup for applying a generative design to a part. This year we want to look at the results that you get from running the part and talk about how to interpret the information that you get back. We also want to look at how to download the desired result as a solid model, modify the file for any needed cleanup, and use it in an assembly. We are going to start by submitting a file to Generative Design in Fusion 360 software, then we’ll look at the results that are returned for strength, weight, and even cost. We will review sorting the results to get the best possible option for what we want, then we will download the file and talk about what you can do with the file. We’ll finish up by talking about changes to Generative Design in Fusion 360 that have come out this year.

In this class, the speaker will share the Fusion 360 free-form modeling tips and tricks that were used to model the Ironman Suit and the Ironman Armor: Mark XLIV—HulkBuster. The process of making these suits was presented at Autodesk University 2017 and 2018. Direct modeling is an extremely powerful tool in Fusion 360 software. The use of features that follow natural gestures and movements (i.e., pull, twist, stretch) empowers users to fully immerse in a modeling experience that provides enjoyment, exploration, and a sense of “flow.” Direct modeling can also bypass steps such as setting planes, sketches, and other 3D commands, which could get in the way of modeling workflows. While direct modeling is typically associated with T-Splines via the Sculpt environment, it is possible to also use it in parametric settings. This presentation will illustrate the power of direct modeling in both environments in Fusion 360 software with the use of simple yet effective workflows and design examples.

In this class, you will learn how to best identify parts for redesign. You will receive a few examples and then see in Fusion 360 software how to redesign the parts keeping design-for-manufacturing (DFM) rules for metal additive manufacturing (AM) in mind. The goal is to redesign the parts using simple operations in Fusion 360 to see that you don't need an organic topology optimized part to get an economical use case. You’ll learn the limits of metal AM and when it is definitely not smart to use this technology.
